My current body of work compares similarities of ongoing effects of trauma to liminal spaces. Depersonalization can consist of a detachment within the self, regarding the mind or body. The world seemingly becomes vague, dreamlike, less real, lacking in significance or being outside reality while looking in. Liminal spaces are defined as the physical spaces between one destination and the next, a threshold of reality. Common examples of such spaces include hallways, airports, and abandoned parks. I’ve always had an interest in the uncanny, off-putting topics. I saw liminal areas as a great parallel to how experiencing depersonalization can feel; symptoms can vary in intensity in everyone, similar to seeing an oddly recognizable room or location despite never actually being there.
