The video works featured in “Nightmare Diaries” were created in a way which allows each audience member to feel the intended emotion Justice aimed to impose, whether a viewer decided to watch the entire series, or simply stopped by and briefly viewed a fragmented segment of the work. Each of the films, “Nightmare Diary: Entry 8,” “do you want him too leave?,” “Power Outage,” and “am i a Bad person?” have specific ambient sounds to further immerse the viewer into the project. Some audio usage in “Power Outage” includes rain and storm sirens recorded on Justice’s phone during a tornado. Each video is meant to be unsettling to watch. The repetitive imagery, apparent low quality still shots that seemingly run on for too long, and the audio feedback looped with a vocoder a countless number of times makes it feel as if one is trapped in a dream and cannot wake up.
“am i a Bad person?” explores the fear of sex. While creating video works, Justice predominately relies on practical sounds and avoids audio digitally created on editing software. To push himself into creating an accurately disturbing project, Justice sampled audio from gay porn videos filmed in 1950. The moans from the original porn film were pitched and reverbed to sound like a growl, a cry, footsteps, and static ambient noises. Alongside altered organic human noises, a 45 second still shot relies strictly on the audio of a vibrator humming on a wooden table. Very little editing was done to this sound. The intention was to be very honest and vulnerable while creating such an uncomfortable work.
“do you want him too leave?” works as a segway between the “Power Outage,” and “Nightmare Diary: Entry 8,” as it also explores the fear of sex while finding balance with the desire for a romantic connection in any desperate way it could be attained. Grammar usage and dialect were very important in this entry. The title being in all lower-case characters and intentional incorrect use of “too” shows submissiveness and a meek approach. “too” alludes to the possibility of having a desire for the “him” in question. “There was a bath tub. i wanted every thing to feel clean i wanted to separate the dirt from the flesh.” The separation between “bath” and “tub” as the opening line is uncomfortable to read, and shows a separation between cleanliness and structure, and the self from the feeling of being unclean.
“Power Outage,” explores a generalized autophobia and the idea of having sympathy for a sleep paralysis demon. The most noticeable sound in this video work is a chair moving back and forth on a hardwood floor. After putting the recorded audio through editing software, the sound was looped to ad nauseum, making the friction of a chair moving on a wooden floor sound like a desperate outcry.
“Nightmare Diary: Entry 8,” visualizes chronic fatigue, a common physical symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder. Visually, the angles reject guidelines which consider a shot to be successful in order to emulate the appearance of a child filming on a VHS recorder. The out of focus frames are partnered with the vibrator humming over audio from sermons. The narrator is seemingly in a state of catatonia, reflecting on their memories, ultimately wondering if the nightmare ever ended after waking.
